County in the coming months... come join us as a volunteer or just to visit!
Humane
Society and Darlington School have joined forces! Here are pictures
from our presentation to Mrs. Tharp's Fifth Grade class at Darlington Lower
School. Shown here is Ann Turner expaining the purpose and activities of the
Humane Society.
The
Fifth Grade Class raised over $300.00 for the Humane Society, and collected
dog food and cat food for the Society. Shown here are Humane Society members
Ann Turner and Lisa Lahti accepting the donations.

Our unofficial education dog is Toto, a member of Lisa Lahti's family rescued
from Animal Control last spring with her 4 puppies. Toto helps teach by showing
off her rabies tag, telling why dogs should be on a leash, and helps explain
the importance of spaying & neutering.
If you would like the Rome/Floyd Humane Society to come to your school, contact
us at 234-7979 or email us at rfhs@cybrtyme.com.
Thank you's to those who've donated thier time, effort or funds to improve

As of June 1, 1998, North Broad Animal Clinic's contract with
Rome Floyd Animal Control to provide spay/neuter and first rabies shot was not
renewed. The clinic is under new ownership, and Dr. Brackett chose not to renew
the contract.
There was a meeting on April 22 with Bill Curtis, Chief of Animal Control, Russell
McClanahan representing the Humane Society, and Dr. Brackett, Dr. Sherman, Dr.
Brooks, Dr. Pate and Dr. Dixon, representing their individual clinics, where
this was discussed. The majority of the veterinarians in Rome/Floyd County were
not present. Those present did not want the contract, and it was decided that
a recommendation would be made to the Floyd County Commissioners to lower the
adoption fees for animals adopted at Animal Control to $20, thus eliminating
the portion of the fee that would cover the spay/neuter and rabies shot.
The Floyd County Commissioners passed this recommendation, and, as of June 1,
1998, the adoption fee for a dog from Animal Control is $25, and for a cat is
$20. The new pet owner is responsible for finding his/her own veterinarian and
is still required by law to have his/her pet spayed/neutered and given its rabies
shot. The adoption fees are County fees, and the Rome Floyd Humane Society will
no longer subsidize adoptions at animal control. The Board of the Humane Society
will meet this summer to decide what direction to take in light of this new
development.
You wandered the streets of our town all alone,
Searching for food and a place to call home.
The place where you landed didn't want you to stay,
They said you were nasty, to come take you away.
It was dark when I found you, and I could barely see,
Your horrible condition and to what a degree.
As I felt of your neck I couldn't believe,
Had a collar rusted into you? It's what it felt like to me.
It wasn't a collar, but a mound of big sores
Plaguing your skin and infecting your pores.
It was scabs made from oozing of your poor weakened skin,
Covering not only your neck, but most of your skin.
So hungry and scared on the ground where you laid.
Should you run to escape me, what mistake had you made?
Would I hurt you? Would I take you to a really bad place?
Was it worse than the hunger and loneliness you faced?
As you rode in the car, as you sat on my lap,
Gentle hands that caressed you didn't feel like a trap.
Oh a dinner! How delicious! You ate it so fast.
Oh a bed, and a blanket, how you hoped it would last.
Oh a bath, what is this? It sure did feel good.
You felt some relief, as I figured you would.
You watched with suspicion day after day.
Then longed for the times that we could go play.
I took you for a ride one day, and rolled the window down
To let you feel breeze on your face, and look around town.
We didn't make it off our street before you jumped out very fast,
Afraid the home you'd come to love would be no more to last.
I stopped the car and followed you straight to the house
There you were, just sitting there quiet as a mouse.
My heart was touched so deeply as I saw the fear upon your face
I held you tight to let you know you weren't leaving this place.
You're doing so much better, but there's still a way to go
The oozing sores have gone away, though your hair grows slow.
Your face now shines with pleasure, your tail now wags with joy,
You prance in your yard as you play with all your toys.
I love you, I do, you mean so much to me.
You are my pretty girl, that's just how it will be.
