About West Nile Virus
If you have questions about the West Nile Virus and/or dead birds in Floyd County, please call the Environmental Health Agency at (706) 295-6316. Dead birds that have been infected are usually found singly (especially blue jays, crows, and raptors), and should be reported within 24 hours after death.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the disease is not likely to be transmitted directly by dead birds to humans and animals, but by mosquitoes that bite the infected birds and then bite other animals. West Nile Virus can be transmitted to humans, cats, dogs, horses, and other animals. Infected animals and people exhibit flu-like symptoms. If not treated in time, the disease may lead to encephalitis.
